Yet Another Gotcha, RDP console this time

Wednesday, November 28th, 2007

So as Nick point out in HIS POST, the /console switch is gone in the upcoming Windows 2008 Server and Vista SP1, having been replaced by /admin. It sure would have been nice to throw up a warning when you use the old switch and let the user know they are not connecting to the console instead of just dumping them quietly into a non console session. Oh ya, also in case you haven’t made the connection yet in your mind this aslo means if you use the rdp gadget on your Vista desktop, it also connects you to a regular session when you click the console check box, and once again no warning. it almost feels latley like they are going out of their way to make it look and feel like we don;t know what we are doing, could Vlad be on to something here? I sure hope the shy is not really falling, now where is that steel umbrella?

Faxing From Vista via SBS

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

OK so you have your shinny new Vista computer and you want to fax from SBS, pretty reasonable request.

You do have one of the higher end versions of Vista right, the crippled (less expensive) versions don’t include the fax at all.

OK first make sure you have the ripcurl patches.

Next open a hole in your Vista Firewall,

Start, Control Panel, Network and Internet, Windows Firewall.

On the right click Allow a program through the firewall.

Click OK to the UAC prompt

When the window opens click the add program button

Scroll down to Windows Fax and Scan, highlight it

OK your way all the way out.

Now open the Windows Fax and Scan applet from Start, All Programs.

Click on Fax at the bottom left corner.

Click on Tools, Fax Accounts

Click on the New Button.

Select Connect to a Fax Server (the second choice)

Select Fax

OK here is the tricky part, if you read the directions it looks like it is saying \\servername\fax but look really closley, it is saying \\servernamefax which is really misleading. What you want to put in this box is just \\servername

Like This

Once you do this, you will be happily looking at your fax console like nothing ever changed.

A number of folks are looking to use IMAP to connect to thier SBS Servers probably because of the iPhones hitting the streets.

Eriq Neale and Tim Barret have just posted and easy to follow How-To Article on Mariëtte’s SmallBiz Server Fourm. Take a look.

Why not use the console you built for us?

Monday, September 10th, 2007

Hi SBS Team, this morning I was once again looking up the allocated memory setting from one of your GREAT POSTS and it occurred to me you were not even telling people to use the SBS Console you built for us.

Instead of

1.  Click START -> Run -> mmc

2.  Click File -> Add/Remove snap-in in MMC

3.  Add health monitor and click ok back to the main screen.

Why not just expand Monitoring and Reporting in the SBS Console

Click Change Alert Notifications

And double click on Allocated Memory on the Performance Counters tab?

Use SBS Console

What is the old saying if you build it they will use it, but not if you don’t tell them about it :>)
