SEP Console Problems

Friday, October 31st, 2008

Let me start out by saying I have been a Symantec AntiVirus Fan and Reseller for a long time. No I did not say Norton, I said Symantec, their is a huge difference in the product lines.

So imagine my frustration when 2 out of the last 5 installations were plagued by this when I opened the console.

I spent hours and hours of unbillable time trying to figure this out on my own, but to no avail.
So I finally broke down and called Symantec Support ( a free call when you buy maintenance) to get some help. Turns out others are having similar issues, but it is not always the same fix. I lucked into a great tech named George, who was amazingly diligent and persistent. He went through all the same first steps I did which are listed in the Symantec Knowledge Base, we uninstalled and reinstalled the SEPM many times, but always getting this same error. We spent 3.5 hours that first day, but we really needed to reboot the box and folks were working so I told him I would do it that night and he would call me back the next day.
Well he wasn’t able to call me the next day (I called it in as a low to moderate priority, I don’t like to cry wolf) but when he did cal back we had the same issue. So having exhausted all the know issues he downloaded ProcMon from Microsoft and dug into the errors. Turned out that a couple of registry keys needed additional rights. Also the admin password I choose had an @ in it, and it turns out the embedded database doesn’t like that or some of the other upper characters.
I thought I would share the registery info here in case it helps you out of this situation. I would recommend you follow the article first as most cases will get solved in that process, but if you are at a loss after that, try these changes AT YOUR OWN RISK of course, neither I nor Symantec will be responsible if you screw-up your registery. Did I mention back it up first?
Here is the first key you need to fix,
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\pmem2.MachineInfo2.1
Right click on it and select Permissions

You need to make sure that System and DomainName\Administrators
Both have Full Control

The other key you need to fix is,
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ASAProv

Right click on it and select Permissions

You need to make sure that System and DomainName\Administrators both have Full Control
And on this key you also need to make sure DomainName\Users have Read rights
(you may need to add Users by clicking the add button)

After making these changes I was able to see the top 3 sections without the error on opening the console

This is what worked for me, like I said there are many different issues they are seeing, so if this doesn’t help you, get out your license agreement and call the support number, maybe you will get lucky and George will answer your call.

btw if like me you have some machines that are not domain members, but you still want to enforce your policies on them (whose a control freak) the is a KNOWLEDGE BASE ARTICLE that spells out how to do it.

An Interesting Conversation About EBS

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

So it is Sunday and I took the day off, to rest up and it seems I didn’t get too far away from the computer :>)

Anyways I was hopping around on the net when I ran across this really well done article about EBS, I thought I would share the LINKwith you. It is on my friend Mitch’s Blog. Mitch recently joined the ranks of the SBS-MVP’s having been previously awarded for community involvement in a category that no longer exists. I have a feeling he may be moving on to EBS next time around. Where ever he lands I wish him all the best, he is a community oriented guy through and through, and a great speaker to boot!

Yes you really need to do this ASAP and yes it does require a reboot, Vlad says you don’t need to, but HA says better safe than sorry. These kinds of patches leave your system in an unknown state, so bit the bullet and let it reboot. See he did :>)

Update, Susan shows why you need to reboot

Is Your ED Not Working

Monday, October 20th, 2008

No this is not a drug commercial.

If you use ExchangeDefender you may be aware of a New Applet that OWN has recently released, that allows you to manage your spam from within Outlook 2007. This is really a cool idea, imagine how disappointed I was when I installed it and it did not work.

Well after a few raging comments  friendly e-mails with Vlad it occurred to me it may be ISA blocking the traffic and when I suggested that to him, he said he was indeed working with My Favorite ISA Guru Amy on the problem and I should contact her. Well of course she knew exactly what to do, she is after all the Goddess of ISA :>)

Anyways if you find yourself in this situation, here is the fix. (you can double click the images to enlarge them)

Fire up your ISA Console and lets add a new Access Rule
BEFORE you click add new Access Rule, Select the SBS Internet Access Rule from the list
This will insure that the new rule gets created in the correct location
Just before the SBS Internet Access Rule

Give your new rule a name that will let you remember what it does

Our new rule will be an Allow rule

We want to select the protocols we will allow

We want to allow HTTPS

and also allow HTTP

We want to allow traffic from the Internal Network

Yes this is a two window process

Now we need to select the destination
We will create a new URL Set

We only need one URL in our URL Set
http://admin.exchangedefender.com

Once you have created it, just select it

Now select it once more

Our new rule will allow all users to get to ED

Take a look at the summary and make sure it is doing what you intended it to.

Don’t forget to apply your changes, but before you do
Make sure the new rule is right above the SBS Internet Access Rule

I always like to see this positive feed back that it applied sucessfully

And now Hurray we get the ED Outlook Applet working

Thank You Amy!

Harry awarded the SBS’er of the year award to none other than the SBS Diva, I think it should have been SBS’er of the decade personally.
