Don’t be in a rush to Server 2008

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

If you are running an SBS 2003 network, don’t be in too big a hurry to stick any Windows 2008 servers on your network. Unless you plan to be an early adopter of SBS 2008 as well. You will get stung needing WS08 Cals in no time at all.

M$ is trying a new backdoor tactic to force you to upgrade.

Greed seems to be running rampant at M$ and Bill has not even officially left yet!

Boy, I guess I have been at this too long, I remember back when M$ relied on the value of their products to sell them! Guess the crack model works better than the value proposition.

Upcoming Triad SBS Group Meeting

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

Keep an eye on the website for updates

The date for our next meeting is July 1st, 2008
Regular Time 6:00pm
Last meeting was June 3rd, 2008

Well we dogged the bullet with the Fourth of July Holiday this year and we are meeting before everyone lights up the grills.

As promised I will be doing a walk through of the public beta so those of you who have not seen Cougar (or SBS 2008 as it is now known) can get a first hand look. Also for those loyal members who actually show up for the meeting, I will be giving out logons so you can poke around remotely until I need to take it down for a new build.

And since SBS 2008 runs on Windows Server 2008 we will make it part of our ongoing launch event and give away some more launch goodies.

So there you have it, two great reasons to show up for this meeting besides just dropping in to visit with friends and colleagues!

Fire Mountain Family Steakhouse 1180 S. Main Street, Kernersville, 27284, 336-996-0456

OH YA I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that the alumni discount for SMB Nation’s Fall Conference expires on June 30th, sign up now and save yourself some money!

1-888-SMB-NAT1         www.smbnation.com

Greetings!

You are receiving this e-mail newsletter as a SMB Nation tribal member. Thank you for your good business!

With profound pleasure, I am delighted to announce SMB Nation 2008 being held in early October 2008 in Seattle. This conference has a fresh look and feel while maintaining a balance between SMB technical and business content.

There will a special geeky element this year as we will be in the same time frame as the release of Windows Small Business Server 2008 (SBS 2008) and Windows Essential Business Server. This time it is REAL!
See you this fall!

Mark Crall’s Top Ten Vista List

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

Shades of Letterman, Mark has Posted his Top Ten List of Vista Facts you should know, let me add number eleven.

11. Some clients fighting with Vista over the last year or so (early adopters) are getting fed up and asking to go back to XP, sometimes the truth hurts, but it is the client’s needs that have to be put in front of our always wanting them to have the latest and greatest new thing. Very soon you will not be able to buy XP so you may want to poll your clients about upcoming purchases (never hurts to ask for business)and what OS they want on them, XP or Vista. Next month when they call you to order a half dozen new pc’s with XP on them, MS won’t be the bad guy, you will when you say that XP isn’t available any longer. They will be saying WHY DIDN’T YOU WARN ME, that is after all part of being a TRUSTED Advisor.

Did you miss my e-mail, SBS 2008 Survey is Live

Monday, June 2nd, 2008

A few day ago I got a request from my pal Kevin Beares to tell the world the new survey is out and ask y’all to complete it. So I blasted out an e-mail. But I guess some of you may not have received it so here is that message in case your spam filter ate it.

The Windows Small Business Server 2008 WW Community Survey is live

This is the third year we have published an SBS WW Community Survey to the SBS Community.

We have learned an amazing amount of information from the people who have taken the time to tell us what they thought. Some things we kind of knew already, but other things were not as clear before we had received the feedback.

Because of the previous surveys, we have made some adjustments in our community engagement. To name a few; we really worked on putting more focus on the Official SBS Blog. Our Sustaining Engineering team runs mini betas with our MVPs before KB’s and Bug Fixes are released via Windows Update. We try to get more involvement in our tech betas from our User Groups. The list does go on.

To the survey, the SBS Product Team would like to hear from the Windows SBS Community again. This survey is completely anonymous. In fact, some of you may have to sign out from Live in order to take the survey. So, if you get a PAGE NOT FOUND error message, please log out of Live and click on the link to the survey again.

We want to know how valuable your experience is with the community resources and information that is available to you today as a member of the Windows SBS Community. We also want to know what you think could be done to improve your Windows SBS Community Experience. Please take a couple of minutes to provide us your candid feedback via this survey and let us know what you think.

Do you still live in an IPv4 World?

Monday, June 2nd, 2008

Well if you do like me, and you hate wading through the extra IPv6 spam give this a try

netsh int ip show config

It will feel like you entered a time machine back to the IPv4 days.

Ok so we are going to have to get used to IPv6 eventually, but now it doesn’ have to be today.

HA Edit:

Just got this note From Michael the leader of the Raliegh SBS Group

Hi Andy,

If you’re not using IPv6 right now, you can do the following:

In HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip6\Parameters\ create a registry DWORD value titled DisabledComponents. Set the data for this value to 0xffffffff to disable all IPv6 components except for the IPv6 loopback interface. This setting also configures the computer to prefer IPv4 over IPv6. Restart the computer for the setting to take effect.

Later on, when you implement IPv6 in your network, simply reset this value’s data to 0 and reboot again
